Although online shopping was less frequent over the summer, people tended to choose more valuable items
Although shoppers made fewer daily online purchases over the summer than between January and May (with the average number of daily transactions down 12%), the average purchase value rose by 7% to €93, compared with both the first half of this year and last summer.
"A cool and rainy summer may have influenced people’s plans. Some, seeking warmth, opted for holiday packages, while others allocated funds to home renovations – we observed an increase in purchases of higher-end home appliances. In addition, there was notable interest in investment gold purchased online. These higher-value purchases, ranging from €2,000 to €2,500, are the main reason the average basket has grown," says Rasa Gruodytė, Head of Client Experience Management at Paysera.
The company estimates that, excluding spending on holiday packages, gold, and higher-end home appliances, the average basket would fall from the current €93 to €83.
Growing demand for split payments
As the average basket increased, shoppers sought ways to split their payments, increasingly opting for leasing and "Buy Now, Pay Later" (BNPL) solutions. The total value of purchases paid this way rose by 13% compared with last summer. However, the average value of a single purchase fell by 12.6% – from €755 last year to €660 this summer.
"While the average purchase value for those using payment splitting has slightly decreased, the total volume of such transactions is growing. This indicates that shoppers are increasingly choosing to split payments not only for the most expensive items, but also for generally larger purchases, easing pressure on their budgets," comments Rasa Gruodytė.
July – the most expensive month
Of all the summer months, July stood out for the highest-value purchases, with the average basket reaching nearly €95. In comparison, the average basket was €93 in June and €90 in August.
"July’s figures reflect the peak of the holiday season. It is the month when travel bookings are made and seasonal goods purchased. These typically higher-value categories naturally pushed up the monthly average basket compared with other summer months," explains Rasa Gruodytė.
In total, during the summer of 2025, Paysera processed €372 million worth of payments in e-shops and across various service websites, 19% more than in the summer of 2024.
